Enerven has been chosen to design and construct all three stages of Origin Energy’s Eraring Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), a project set to become the largest battery energy storage system in the Southern Hemisphere. With a total capacity of 700MW/2,800MWh, the Eraring BESS is a cornerstone of Australia’s renewable energy transition and grid stability efforts.

The customer

Origin Energy is one of Australia’s leading integrated energy companies, with extensive operations in energy retail, power generation, and renewable energy. As part of its strategy to lead the energy transition, Origin is making significant investments in large-scale battery storage to stabilize the grid and increase renewable energy capacity.

“This project showcases the best of Enerven’s expertise in delivering world-class high-voltage infrastructure solutions, supporting Australia’s transition to a sustainable energy future.”

The opportunity

The Eraring BESS is a transformational project for Australia’s energy sector. Upon completion, it will be the largest energy storage system in the Southern Hemisphere and one of the largest in the world, with a capacity of 700MW/2,800MWh.

Enerven’s role spans all three stages of the project:

  • Stage 1: a 460MW/1,070 MWh two-hour duration battery, expected online in late 2025
  • Stage 2: a 240MW/1,030 MWh four-hour duration grid-forming battery, expected online in early 2027
  • Stage 3: a 700MWh expansion, increasing the Stage 1 battery’s dispatch duration to approximately four hours, also expected online in late 2025.

Spanning more than 17 hectares, the Eraring BESS will feature over 2,000 individual battery enclosures and 180 kilometres of cabling. When cycled once daily, it will dispatch enough energy to power more than 150,000 NSW households annually, providing critical support for variable renewable energy sources like wind and solar.

The solution

Key specifications delivered by Enerven:

  • design and construction of a 700 MW/2,800 MWh battery storage system across three stages
  • integration of advanced grid-forming battery technology to stabilize and strengthen the electricity grid
  • deployment of over 2,000 battery enclosures and 180 kilometres of cabling across a 17-hectare site
  • management of a multi-phase, large-scale construction project, ensuring seamless delivery across all stages.

Enerven’s expertise in high-voltage infrastructure and complex energy projects has been integral to the success of the Eraring BESS. Partnering with Origin and technology supplier Wärtsilä, Enerven is driving the transformation of the Eraring site from a coal-fired power station to a hub of renewable energy innovation.
