Enerven delivered an innovative solution to perform overdue transformer maintenance at ElectraNet’s Back Callington and Kanmantoo substations, overcoming seasonal challenges and ensuring uninterrupted power supply to customers.

The customer

ElectraNet plays a critical role in South Australia’s electricity supply chain, operating a reliable transmission network that safely delivers power to urban, regional, and remote areas. As a specialist in asset and project management, ElectraNet supports customers across the state, including SA Power Networks, Enerven, and other large directly connected clients.

The opportunity

As part of Enerven’s long-standing maintenance contract with ElectraNet, routine transformer maintenance was required at the Back Callington and Kanmantoo substations. These transformers supply power to several customers, making uninterrupted generation essential during maintenance work.

Performing this maintenance required dry weather conditions, yet the secured outage window fell in July—a time of year with persistent wet weather. Previous attempts to complete the work had been postponed due to similar challenges, leaving the maintenance overdue and increasing the urgency of finding a solution.

The solution

Key actions delivered by Enerven:

innovative weather protection: the team developed and implemented a custom tent structure to encapsulate the transformer. This tent connected to a ventilation system designed to remove moisture from the air, creating dry conditions for the maintenance to proceed.

efficiency and reliability: by enabling work to proceed despite adverse weather conditions, the solution prevented further delays and ensured uninterrupted power supply for customers.

This unique approach, never before used for this type of maintenance task, proved extremely effective and set a precedent for similar challenges in future projects.
