Hon. Penny Sharpe, NSW Minister for Climate Change, Energy and Environment visited the Eraring Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) for a progress site update.

The visit highlighted the significant advancements made on this project, which will become one of Australia’s largest energy storage systems, with a combined capacity of over 2 GWh once both stages are complete.

Project Progress

Despite challenges such as significant rainfall affecting bulk earthworks, the project team has made impressive progress, achieving several key milestones:

  • completion of conduit and footing works in zone 5, finalising this scope for stage 1
  • energisation of switch rooms and control rooms before Christmas, enabling downstream zone 1 energisation
  • placement of all stage 3 batteries in zone 3, paving the way for commissioning activities.

Stage 2 of the Eraring BESS will add a 240 MW/1030 MWh four-hour duration, grid-forming battery to complement the 460 MW/1073 MWh two-hour battery under construction in stage Construction on stage 2 will begin in early 2025, with completion expected by Q1 2027.

The Minister’s visit reinforced the importance of this project in strengthening Australia’s electricity grid and supporting the transition to renewable energy.

Enerven is proud to be playing a key role in delivering this transformative project, demonstrating its expertise in high-voltage infrastructure and commitment to supporting Australia’s energy future.
